Recreational Shared Use:
A School Funding Opportunity

Shared use is an opportunity for children throughout the District to be physically active by using school facilities and for schools to get needed funding from rental agreements with commmunity organizations.
>$1,340,595
was paid in rental fees by community organizations to the DC Department of General Services (DGS)
for using school recreational facilities
during the 2014-2015 fiscal years.
* This is a gross underestimate due to the lack of complete
contractual information available but this number gives at least a glimpse into the possibilities of shared use revenue for schools.

Shifting these funds from DGS to schools would provide an incentive for principals
to open their facilities for recreational
shared use and create more opportunities
for kids to be physically active.
